At We Dig, sustainability isn’t a greenwash buzzword—it’s our very foundation. We were the first company in the UK to offer carbon neutral, managed WordPress hosting through our original venture, Really Green WP over 14 years ago. Today, as We Dig, we host hundreds of websites on servers powered entirely by renewable energy.
Why Carbon Neutral Matters
Our founders, James and Lyndsey, have deep roots in environmental and social justice work. Long before We Dig existed, they were active in green organisations, driven by a shared understanding of the urgent need to address climate change. That ethos continues to shape everything we do.
We don’t just talk sustainability—we build it into our business model. From the energy powering our servers to the clients we choose to work with, we’re committed to reducing digital carbon footprints and supporting those making a positive impact.
Hosting That’s Green to the Core
James pioneered carbon neutral hosting in the UK, and we’ve only improved since. What began with offsetting has evolved into a fully renewable-powered infrastructure—without compromising performance or reliability. In a space dominated by tech giants, we’re proud to offer a greener, independent alternative.
Building Better, Lighter Websites
Sustainable hosting is only half the story. We also design and build websites that are lean, fast, and efficient. That starts with clean, well-written code.
Why? Because lighter code uses less processing power, which means faster load times and lower energy consumption.
We avoid bloated templates and unnecessary scripts. Instead, we focus on:
- Optimised images that reduce load times
- Lightweight graphics and icons
- Lazy loading so images appear only when needed
The result? Websites that are not only beautiful and functional, but also environmentally responsible.
Powered by the Sun—and Giving Back to the Earth
Our own operations run on solar panels and green energy. And for every new client who joins our managed hosting service, we will fund the digging of two water bunds—semi-circular pits that capture rainwater in arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa.
These bunds help restore ecosystems, support biodiversity, and improve local livelihoods. It’s a small gesture with a big ripple effect.
